An elderly man is in hospital after the three-wheeled motorcycle he was riding collided with an SUV on the highway west of Edmonton.

Emergency crews responded to reports of the crash on Parkland Drive and Range Road 15 just before 2 p.m.

A witness told CTV News the driver of the motorcycle did not obey a stop sign in the moments leading up to the crash.

"He was headed north and he didn't have the right of way," Witness Natalie Birnie said on the scene in an interview with CTV News. "The other gal in the SUV was headed east, and he pulled out in front of her."

"The driver was horribly upset and in shock I'm sure."

The man's injuries and condition are not known, the 76-year-old rider was airlifted to hospital immediately following the collision.

The crash is under investigation.
