Morinville RCMP said a man in his 80s had to be airlifted to an Edmonton hospital Thursday morning, after a car and a semi-truck collided on a highway north of Edmonton.

Police said the collision happened just after 11 a.m., on Highway 28 near Range Road 234.

According to police, a car had been travelling eastbound on the highway, when it was hit by the semi that had also been travelling eastbound.

Investigation has revealed the driver of the car had been making an illegal U-turn when the collision happened.

It’s believed visibility in the area was greatly reduced, due to foggy conditions at the time.

Only the driver of the small car, an 83-year-old man, suffered injuries.

He was airlifted to hospital in Edmonton by STARS Air Ambulance, the extent of his injuries was not clear.

The highway in both directions had to be temporarily detoured Thursday morning, between Bon Accord and Gibbons.
