The Edmonton Police Service Traffic Unit is investigating, after a man riding an ATV on private property in the northeast portion of the city crashed his vehicle, and died a short time later.
Police said emergency crews were called to the Yellowhead Aggregates gravel pit located on 137 Avenue and Meridian Street shortly before 7 pm Wednesday.
Two men had been riding ATVs on the land, when one of the men allegedly drove his ATV up the side of a large sand pile and plunged down the other side, police said the rider fell about 20 metres (65 feet).
The victim, a 38-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency crews.
According to police, the riders did not have permission to ride their ATVs on the private property.
"You can only drive ATVs on private land, and definitely not on city streets or parks," Const. Steven Levesque with the Edmonton Police Service Traffic Section said in a press release. "If you are operating an ATV on private land, you must have permission from the land owner."
Police said the deceased was wearing a helmet at the time.
The rider's identity has not been released. Alcohol is not believed to be a contributing factor in the crash.
