RCMP are investigating after an early-morning crash in a town east of Edmonton left a man dead early Tuesday morning.

Police said Vegreville RCMP, members from the Mundare fire department and local emergency medical services were called early Tuesday morning to a single-vehicle crash on Highway 855 and 50 Avenue in Mundare.

It's believed the vehicle involved had been headed south on Highway 855, and was travelling at a high rate of speed, when the driver lost control.

Investigators said the car veered into a steep embankment of 50 Avenue.

The lone male inside the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, police said he was not wearing a seatbelt.

RCMP said it's believed a mixture of alcohol and prescription medications were also believed to be factors in the crash.
