RED DEER - A central Alberta man is facing charges after an RCMP officer received minor injuries grappling with a man who was arguing with neighbours.

Police say they were called to a home in Red Deer, Alta., Monday afternoon after a report that a man was yelling and banging a shovel against a neighbour's stair railing.

As an officer tried to arrest the man, the officer was punched in the eye, causing his head to snap back and hit a wall.

The officer was taken to hospital, treated for minor injuries and released.

Police say the 43-year-old man - whose identity they haven't released - is charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and mischief to property.

He was released from custody on a promise to appear and is scheduled to make a court appearance on the charges Jan. 22.
