Police are investigating the city's latest homicide after a man was shot to death Sunday shortly after attending a party at a downtown hall.

Homicide detectives were called to the Canadian Native Friendship Centre at 112 Avenue and 101 Street after several people called police to say they heard six shots being fired in the area.

An after-hours party was allegedly happening at the centre when the shots were heard around 4:45 a.m.

Shortly after going to the scene, police say they got a call from the Royal Alexandra Hospital saying a gunshot victim was brought in with critical wounds.

The victim, a man in his mid-20s who is known to police, was pronounced dead in hospital.

Insp. Terry Rocchio says police have no suspects at this time.

"There appears there's alcohol involved," he said. "Who knows what started this fight ... It could just be two people as simple as getting into an argument and solving it with a gun unfortunately."

Some witnesses tell CTV News they have seen violence occur at the hall before, including many late-night parties.

Carol Morrison said Sunday's incident points to a growing violence problem downtown.

"It's not that surprising really, I mean you just kind of get used to it I guess unfortunately," she said.

Police say the attack does not appear to be drug or gang-related.
