Man sent to hospital after being hit by LRT
A man was taken to hospital Friday night after being hit by an LRT in south Edmonton.
A man was rushed to hospital Friday night after being hit by an LRT train in south Edmonton.
The incident happened near the Health Sciences LRT Station around 8 p.m. Friday on 114 Street near University Drive.
The transit station was full at the time and passengers say they could tell that something had gone wrong.
“It felt like someone was hit,” said passenger Denis LaPlante.
“Basically the train stopped suddenly and afterwards the conductor came on and said in a shaky voice, ‘there was an emergency situation and everyone stay in their seats.’”
Police confirm a man had been hit while he was crossing the tracks.
The man, believed to be in his early 50s, was taken away by ambulance.
“The only time people saw him was when they saw him cross over so we don’t know at this point if he was waiting for something or trying to bide his time until the train came along or what happened,” said Sgt. Mike Keef with the Edmonton Police Service.
Police say the man suffered a head injury and was taken to University Hospital where he is in serious but stable condition.
Train passengers were evacuated and buses were brought in to take passengers to the next station.
