Police in northern Alberta have released remarkable video, showing a confirmed meteor burning across the night sky over the weekend.

RCMP said on Saturday, just after 9:30 p.m., an officer from the Manning detachment patrolling a dark highway when he saw the fireball.

The officer was on Highway 35 about 20 kilometres north of Manning near Hawk Hills when the bright light crossed the sky.

The six-second video was also confirmed to be a meteor by an expert at the Telus World of Science.

“Definitely what people saw this weekend, on Saturday night, if they were out and about around 9:35 p.m., was a very very bright meteor,” Frank Florian with the Telus World of Science said. “Sometimes, it’s deemed a fireball because it far exceeds a regular streak of light which is a normal meteor.

“This one was definitely substantial in size and created a nice light show for anyone out and about on Saturday night.”

Florian said the meteor was most likely a one-off, and not part of a meteor shower.
