RCMP east of Edmonton had to shut down a section of Highway 16, after a major collision involving several vehicles unfolded on the highway.

Strathcona County RCMP said Highway 16 eastbound, between Broadmoor Boulevard and Highway 21 had been closed due to the crash late Monday morning.

Police on the scene said the highway’s surface was covered in ice.

“Road conditions are bad to say at best,” Cst. Blair Gillman with Sherwood Park RCMP said. “It’s basically like a curling rink, it’s pebbled ice, it’s extremely slick.”

It's believed the pileup happened as vehicles tried to slow down to avoid another nearby collision.

By about 4 p.m. Monday, police said the highway had been reopened to traffic.

Police said they believe about 10 cars were involved in the series of collisions.

Mostly minor injuries were reported, although one 34-year-old woman suffered serious injuries.

In addition, RCMP said highways in the area are in poor condition, and drivers are advised to drive with caution.

RCMP are investigating the cause behind the collision.
