Two people are fighting for their lives in hospital this morning after a crash in southeast Edmonton.

Police say a car was speeding shortly after midnight when it spun out, along 66 Street near 38 Avenue, and struck a light standard.

Officers say there were five people in the car at the time of the collision. Two victims were taken to hospital in critical condition.

"Two other occupants fled on foot, for reasons yet unknown. They were apprehended by the K-9 unit about three blocks away from here hiding in a lane way." said EPS Inspector Brian Nowlan at the scene.

Police believe alcohol is a factor. The crash is still under investigation.
