Swimmers are back in the waters at Mill Woods Recreation Centre pool which reopened Saturday after flooding forced its closure earlier this month.

A storm on July 12 filled the basement of the rec centre, damaging the electrical system and plumbing equipment.

"We ended up with about four and a half feet of water in our basement which basically wiped out all the equipment we use to maintain the water quality in the pools here," said Chester McNaughton with the Mill Woods Recreation Centre.

"We had to replace all of that equipment, pumps, controllers, electrical, basically rebuild the basement and clean it up."

The majority of the rec centre is now fully operational.

All pool amenities except the waves and whirl pool became available to the public beginning at 6 a.m. Saturday.

"People are really happy to have it open again," McNaughton said.

"It was a little bit of an inconvenience because we really like Mill Woods Rec Centre. My son just started Swim Kids 1 so he missed two sessions," said mother Renu Bains, whose two kids swim at the pool.

"But whatever, it was a flood, things happen."

The whirl pool is expected to be operational the week of July 30.

The wave machine will be replaced during a planned facility shutdown scheduled to begin August 27.

The city says some meeting rooms in the centre remain unavailable.
