Closing arguments have begun in the trial of an Alberta man accused of murdering two prostitutes.

The Crown told Justice Sterling Sanderman he should convict Thomas Svekla, 40, because he was found with the dead body of one of the victims, Theresa Innes.

Prosecutor Ashley Finlayson said Svekla offered differing accounts of how he came to possess Innes's body and readily admitted that he is a liar.

Svekla is accused of second-degree murder in the deaths of Innes, 36, and 19-year-old Rachel Quinney.

Quinney's mutilated body was found in a field north of Edmonton by Svekla in 2004.

The remains of Innes were found in a hockey bag that Svekla transported from northern Alberta to his sister's home in Fort Saskatchewan just east of Edmonton.
