A piece of Edmonton’s history came crumbling down Wednesday night.
Members of the community came out to watch as work began on the demolition of the old Cromdale Hotel on 118 Avenue and 82 Street.
The derelict hotel has been vacant since 2004, after health officials declared it unfit for humans.
Many area residents say getting rid of the hotel will be a step forward in revitalizing the area.
"I've lived here for about four years and I've been anticipating this moment for a while," said Scott Fletcher.
One couple marked the occasion by wearing customized T-shirts that read 'It's demolition time.'
“We had them made about a year ago -- we had those shirts waiting for the demolition,” said Gerard Forget.
Shoppers Drug Mart is planning a new store for the property.
"It further enhances the revitalization that 118 Avenue has been going through for the last four and a half years," said Joachim Holtz, executive director of the Alberta Avenue Business Association.
Construction will begin in September and the new store is expected to open next spring.
