The Edmonton Eskimos have released defensive tackle Adam Braidwood. This comes five months after Braidwood was arrested and charged in two separate incidents in Stony Plain and Edmonton.

"After a lengthy discussion with Adam this week we have mutually agreed to release him from his contract. This move is not being made to pass judgment on the legal process, but rather an acknowledgement that no resolution appears likely until his trial, which doesn't begin until 2012. Adam has indicated that his total focus is on the legal case, which is understandable," Eskimo GM Eric Tillman said in a statement Thursday.

Braidwood is facing charges of sex assault, weapons possession, uttering threats, assault, and other firearms offences stemming from an alleged incident in early December in Edmonton.

Police have not revealed the circumstances around those charges.

The 26-year-old was also charged in relation to an incident in November where a witness reported to police they saw a young man being forced into the trunk of a car west of Edmonton.

Police were able to locate the suspect vehicle on Range Road 272, north of Township Road 520 on November 19th.

Officers said they saw two men standing outside the vehicle and two males were sitting inside the vehicle. One of the males standing outside of the vehicle had no shirt on and appeared to have significant injuries to his arms and legs.

The 20-year-old male victim from Stony Plain was taken to an Edmonton area hospital for non-life-threatening injures.

Braidwood was arrested at the scene along with 25-year-old Shane Bergstrom, and 23-year-old Taylor Kurtz.

Braidwood was released on bail in late January.
