A non-profit organization dedicated to rehabilitating injured birds of prey is trying to pick up the pieces, after one of their buildings was destroyed in a fire earlier in the week.
The building operated by the Alberta Society for Injured Birds of Prey had been in Roseanna Gullekson's familly for three decades, and housed injured birds through the winter.
"My mom is beating herself up about not being able to save the birds," said Gullekson. "A large part of my childhood was spent in this building, feeding birds, cleaning cages... There's a lot of history burned"
Fire officials from the Strathcona County say the cause of the blaze was most likely electrical and said the fire spread “so quickly that our onsite personnel were unable to save all but one bird that was inside the building.”
CTV News has learned a dozen birds were killed in the blaze, while one owl was able to escape.
To rebuild and make repairs Gullekson says it will cost about $50,000. A GoFundMe page has been launched to raise funds to rebuild the destroyed building, hoping the society's supporters will help.
