The bail hearing for a man facing multiple impaired driving charges, after a vehicle crashed into the patio of a restaurant over the weekend, hitting a family and killing a toddler, was pushed back again Thursday.
The bail hearing for Richard Suter, 62, was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but proceedings were delayed a number of times, before the case was put over to Thursday.
Late Thursday afternoon, the case was adjourned, to resume Friday – the hearing is complete, but the judge has not yet delivered a decision.
Suter is facing a total of four impaired driving-related charges, after his car plowed into the patio of a restaurant in the area of 142 Street and 23 Avenue Sunday evening.
The car hit a family of four – three of whom survived with minor injuries – but a 2-year-old boy, identified only as ‘Geo’, died as a result of injuries he suffered in the crash.
For Suter’s court appearance Thursday, he was expected to appear in person; however, he ended up attending via closed-circuit television.
The courtroom where the hearing was held was full of people, about 150 attended; so many attended that court security had to turn a number of people away.
Investigators said earlier this week that it’s believed Suter meant to put his car in reverse, but shifted it into drive – they believe he may have been arguing with his wife beforehand.
One of the charges Suter faces is failure to provide a breath sample, police said Suter provided one breath sample, but refused to provide a second one.
