An airplane that crashed in British Columbia, leaving one person dead and the pilot injured, is registered to an Edmonton address.

The plane crashed on a private airstrip near Crawford Bay off the Kokanee Springs Golf Resort over the Labour Day long weekend.

Officials said the aircraft was on approach when it tried to abort the landing but hit a tree.

An eyewitness said a female passenger in the plane died on the scene while the pilot was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“We found the airplane upside down and in flames,” Paul Hindson explained.

“There were many, many people there that showed up and everybody was trying their best to save these people.

“It was one of those scenes out of a movie, you know, three or four minutes after we removed these people from the aircraft the tanks exploded and the entire aircraft was engulfed in flames. So it was very lucky that myself and the people that helped me were not injured.”

The Transportation Safety Board has confirmed the Cessna was registered to a local address.

No names have been released and the investigation continues.
