Edmonton police are investigating what could be the city's eighth homicide of the year after a fight reportedly turned deadly on the city's north end.

Police were called to an apartment complex, at 64 Street and 129 Avenue, after a fight reportedly broke out inside the building around 1 am.

When police arrived on the scene, they said officers found a man's body on the ground outside the building.

"[There were] as many as half a dozen people, all fighting and milling about," Inspector Brian Nowlan said on the scene. "When we arrived we found one male deceased, appears to be in his mid-twenties."

A neighbour CTV News spoke with said the victim was fatally stabbed.

"He was stabbed, beaten up pretty bad, didn't look like he had fought back," Neighbour Kalin Schuck said.

The resident said he knew the victim, and was saddened the man could be the city's latest homicide victim.

"[I had] just run by him in the hallway, [and said] 'Hey how's it going, what's new, how's life, how's the girlfriend?' You know, he [had] never been to my suite or whatever, we [had] never sat down and talked like buddies or whatever but I knew him."

Another resident in the area has had enough with the violence in the neighbourhood and fears for his safety.

"You can't even come out at night; there are a lot of people walking around trying to rob people all the time. All the time," said Kenny Lejour.

Investigators spent Wednesday afternoon knocking on the doors of homes surrounding the scene, in an attempt to speak to possible witnesses.

"There's evidence that there was a fight inside," Insp. Nowlan said. "There's evidence that it spilled outside."

Police are calling the death suspicious but said no suspects are in police custody.

The victim's identity has not been confirmed, an autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday morning.

Police are asking anyone with information on the events leading up to the death to call the Edmonton Police Service non-emergency line at 780-423-4567 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
