Days after he was arrested, ending an hours-long standoff in Redwater, RCMP have laid more charges against a 22-year-old man.
On Friday, Redwater RCMP added eleven charges, to an already long list Patrick Young is already facing.
The new charges include arson, mischief, four weapons and firearms related charges and five counts of failing to comply with recognizance – all related to a seven-hour standoff in Redwater on Christmas Day.
Young was already facing more than 50 charges, related to the shooting on Dec. 23, and another incident dating back to September.
The news comes on the same day Young was scheduled to appear in an Edmonton courtroom.
Defence lawyer Hasaan Jomha said his client will undergo a five day fitness assessment, to find if he is fit to stand trial.
Jomha said the assessment will lay the groundwork for a 30 day psychiatric evaluation, which he plans to apply for next week, depending in results.
The accused did not attend Friday’s court appearance – his lawyer told CTV News there was ‘an incident in cells this morning’.
Its alleged Young was driving an SUV that was stopped by Edmonton Police in the west end on Dec. 23.
Police pulled over the SUV that night, but the driver allegedly got out of the vehicle and fired at police – who fired back, shattering the back window of the SUV before the driver fled the scene.
“That shooting resulted in a lengthy investigation, going round the clock until we determined that Mr. Young was in Redwater where our Edmonton Tactical Team went out and then worked with the RCMP ERT team,” EPS Acting Insp. Dan Jones said Thursday.
Edmonton Police and RCMP officers caught up with Young in Redwater, where he was eventually arrested on Christmas Day, following a seven hour standoff with police at a motel.
RCMP told CTV News on Thursday that investigators were still assessing the standoff in Redwater, but additional charges against Young related to the incident had not been laid.
