More than 600,000 Mr. Coffee single-cup brewers recalled in U.S. and Canada

More than 600,000 Mr. Coffee single cup brewers - including more than 80,000 in Canada - are being recalled because of a potential burn hazard.

The company, along with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, made the recall announcement on Thursday.

The units are imported by Jarden Consumer Solutions.

520,000 units in the U.S. and 80,700 in Canada are being recalled over what the company says is a build-up of steam in the water reservoir that can force the brewing chamber open and expel hot coffee grounds and water.

There have been 164 reports of the brewing chamber opening due to steam pressure including about 59 reports in the U.S. and two in Canada of burn injuries to consumers' face, upper torso and hands.

The affected coffeemaker comes in black with silver, red or white trim and is about 11 inches tall with a Brew Now /Off button and a removable drip tray. The water tank is on top of the unit toward the back.

The makers bear model numbers, printed on the bottom of the brewer, starting with the letters BVMC-KG

The coffee makers, which were made in China, were sold from September 2010 through August for between $60 and $80.

The coffee makers were sold online and at Bed Bath & Beyond, Brandsmart, JC Penney, Kmart, Lowe's, Target and Wal-Mart.

Consumers are being asked to stop using the brewers immediately and contact 1-800-993-8609 or go the Mr. Coffee website for details on getting a free replacement unit.
