A mother of four and a soon-to-be grandmother was killed in a highway crash near Daysland this past weekend.

The 47-year-old Daysland woman was travelling in an SUV when it was hit by a minivan. RCMP say Shelly Patterson was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman's husband, Jim Patterson, is still recovering in hospital after the crash. The couple would have celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary this month.

Two of the couple's children, Leeann Zellweger and Jamie Patterson, tell CTV News they are still trying to come to grips with their mother's sudden death.

A 29-year-old Edmonton woman was also killed in the collision.

Police say Erin Huggan was sitting in the passenger seat of the minivan travelling westbound on Highway 13 when it crossed the centre line and struck the SUV head-on.

The woman was airlifted to hospital by Stars Air Ambulance but succumbed to her injuries.

RCMP say alcohol is believed to have played a role in this crash.

Const. Andrew Druhan says the crash is another example of how alcohol and driving don't mix.

Zellweger says her mother was a volunteer for Mother's Against Drunk Driving (MADD).

The woman says she and her mother stopped volunteering after the Camrose chapter of MADD closed. Zellweger says she will now work to have it reopened.

The crash remains under police investigation at this point.

Daysland is located about 135 kilometres southeast of Edmonton.
