The province is upgrading its emergency public warning system – alerting Albertans using more than radio and television.

Alberta Emergency Alert will eventually replace the Emergency Public Warning System which has been used in the province since 1992.

The older system takes over radio and television broadcasts at any time, to send warnings to Albertans in the case of emergency or disaster situations.

The new system will use the internet to send alerts through radio, television and social media.

During the summer, staff in communities province-wide, and provincial and federal government staff will be trained to issue alerts through the new system.

Through the transition period, alerts will be issued through both the old and new systems.

The new system will be officially launched in the fall.
