Officer shoots armed man at funicular: EPS
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating after a man was shot by an Edmonton police officer Thursday afternoon.
The Edmonton Police Service said multiple calls came in around noon about a man with a handgun on the 100 Street Funicular promenade bridge near the Frederick G. Todd lookout.
When officers arrived on scene and began to contain the man, EPS said he started moving around the promenade and refused to surrender when ordered by police.
Soon after, EPS said there was a confrontation and one officer shot the man.
Video posted to social media shows a number of police officers closing in on a person on the ground next to the funicular.
The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries, police said. No one else was injured.
Police said a handgun was found at the scene.
A witness CTV News Edmonton spoke with on Friday was in the area with his wife and two young children minutes before the incident.
"We saw a man sitting there with stuff laid on the bench…and he started to yell at us with his hand gestures, very threatening hand gestures," the father, who CTV News agreed not to name, said.
The family was about to leave when they heard a woman scream.
"She was laying on the ground when I heard the loud cry. So I am assuming she fell or he pushed her at some point," the man added.
He said the woman got away, boarded the funicular with the family, called 911 and said the man had a gun.
The witness told CTV News he was "frightened" when he heard the man had a gun.
The Director of Law Enforcement has directed ASIRT to investigate the shooting.
The funicular reopened on Friday.
