EDMONTON -- A 23-year-old Valleyview resident is dead following a crash involving a cattle hauler and a car on a northern Alberta highway Wednesday morning.

Valleyview RCMP responded to the two-vehicle collision on Highway 49, south of Township Road 713, at approximately 11:49 a.m.

Police say the cattle hauler was heading southbound on Highway 49 and for "unknown reasons" a collision occured with a car heading northbound.

The 23-year-old driver of the car was prounounced dead at the scene, and the driver of the cattle hauler suffered minor injuries, said police.

Police will not be releasing the name of the victim.

The cattle hauler was transporting pigs at the time of the crash, and a number of pigs have died as a result, said police.

Veterinary services were on scene to help with the pigs that required emergency transportation from the scene, said RCMP.

The road was fully closed for several hours as police investigated the crash, and traffic is now being allowed on one lane of the two lane highway.
