One person is dead and several others were sent to hospital after an apparent mass drug overdose in central Edmonton.
Police were called to a condominium building at 10636 120 Street around 4 p.m. Sunday, after receiving reports of five people in medical distress. Police say drugs were found in the suite. They're now working to determine the origin.
One woman is confirmed to have died. Two other women remain in hospital. One was listed in critical condition, the other in stable condition. Two other men involved are recovering in hospital but are listed in stable condition.
"There was quite a quantity of assorted pills on the kitchen table and one of the individuals was able to confirm that was part of the mixture they were taking this afternoon," said Insp. Brian Nowlan with the Edmonton Police Service.
"Whatever drug they're using, it's lethal. So we're concerned with the type of drug and where it came from."
Police were seen removing a body from the condo building around 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
"We saw them take out one girl and I saw two guys who were able to walk to the ambulance," said Carmen Thomas who lives in the complex. "It was pretty freaky."
Police say it appears everyone involved was in their late teens or early to mid-20s and say when emergency crews arrived the five individuals were "suffering from various stages of advanced drug use."
