Parents and students of McCauley School gathered Monday night hoping to save their school from permanent closure. The group is rallying behind the 100-year-old building, trying to convince public school board officials to keep it open.

The school, located at 9538 – 107 Avenue, recently underwent a renovation, but board officials say the school doesn't have enough students to keep it running.

"It's like going from their family into an extended family where you know if you're in need they have no problem with it, they don't treat you different," said parent April Sullivan.

The City of Edmonton is looking to revamp the area around the school with a project called the Quarters, which will include new developments centered around a pedestrian friendly design and creative development.

But despite the city's plan for a revitalization, school board officials aren't convinced school enrolment numbers will increase.

"I've had discussions with the mayor, we've talked to people about the revitalization efforts - to date, revitalization efforts really haven't made a difference in terms of student populations," said Don Fleming, chair of the Edmonton Public School Board.

If the board votes to close the school in June, current students will go to either John A McDougall or Spruce Avenue.

The board will make a decision on April 13th.
