A pedestrian was struck and killed early Wednesday morning while attempting to get around the crossing arms near 99 Street and Whitemud Drive.

Edmonton police said the victim was pushing a grocery store cart, attempted to crawl under the lowered crossing arms, and his cart became stuck on the tracks before he was struck by a southbound CP train.

The man was taken to hospital, where he later died.

People working in the area said they had seen the man collecting bottles every day.

"I didn't know him. I didn't talk to him but it's kind of devastating, like I'm a little even shaken up and I didn't even really know him, just from seeing him," said witness Amanda Purkiss.

The incident caused trouble for traffic in two locations: on 51 Avenue, east of Gateway Blvd and on the Whitemud overpass at Calgary Trail. However, Whitemud Drive was not affected by the incident.

Canadian Pacific officials also attended the scene and are conducting an investigation.

Police said there was a camera onboard the train and the footage could be used in the investigation.
