Edmontonians are being reminded about the dangers of leaving pets in vehicles as the city enters warmer summer months.

Firefighters were called to the parking lot at the Valley Zoo Tuesday where they found a dog locked inside a vehicle. Firefighters said the dog appeared to be very hot.

"The windows were open but it was very hot in the vehicle," said Capt. Chris Camarta.

"People don't realize how hot it can get inside."

The zoo made a public announcement about the dog to quickly get the owners out to the vehicle so firefighters didn't need to break car windows.

Officials say the dog will be fine, but the incident serves as a reminder to others about how quickly animals in cars become distressed on a warm day.

"It's really important not to leave your animals in the car in this kind of heat," Camarta said.
