Two people survived after a small plane crashed into a farmer's field near the Cooking Lake Airport east of Edmonton Sunday afternoon.

Witnesses who were at the airport and saw the plane crash say it happened at around 1 p.m.

Terry Allen, a pilot who was the first person on scene, says he jumped inside his pickup truck and rushed to the crash site.  There in a farmer's field he saw the 172A Cessna belly up with the two people who were on board standing outside of the plane.

"It's really soft out here, so I think what happened was he nose dived it over once he touched down," said Allen.  "So he did a great job under those conditions, you've got to take your hat off to him...they both walked away from that aircraft."

RCMP say the a 38-year-old male pilot and a 33-year-old female passenger were treated for minor injuries.

The details surrounding the crash are not yet known but witnesses say they noticed the plane travelling really low.

"It looks like it just flipped as it landed," said witness Deanna Allen.  "Looks like they glided down and then flipped."

The Canadian Transportation Safety Board and RCMP will be investigating the crash.

The Cooking Lake Airport is located about 30 kilometres east of Edmonton.
