Some Edmontonians are hoping to play their way to a new world record.
Two players kicked off their world record attempt Monday at West Edmonton Mall. They’re hoping to beat the current Guinness World Record for the longest video game soccer marathon, while raising awareness and money for the Ronald McDonald House.
“I think that we’re going to be doing pretty well,” said player Scott Francis-Winder. “Truthfully I had never played this game until about 9 a.m. this morning but I think I’m doing better.”
Players are given ten minutes of break time for every continuous hour of game play. They aim to play for a total of 48 hours.
“The record right now is about 38 hours so there is some leeway, but we thought we’d rather blow the record out of the water and we thought 48 hours seemed nice,” said Kyle Geortzen with the Ronald McDonald House.
“It’s leading up to Ronald McDonald House Day with FC Edmonton, where proceeds from ticket sales are going to Ronald McDonald House. We thought it was a good way to kick off our partnership with FC Edmonton through a soccer-related event and some fun video game action and having us able to get into the Guinness Book of World Records.”
Edmontonians are being encouraged to come down and check out the world-record attempt and make a donation to the Ronald McDonald House.
The players are set up in front of HMV. The marathon continues until Wednesday.
