Edmonton police are investigating, after an explosion in the basement of a home in a northeast Edmonton neighbourhood left three people injured.

Firefighters were called to the home in the area of 137 Avenue near 74 Street Sunday just after 6:20 p.m.

“Upon arrival they found three individuals on the front lawn of the residence and they were all transported to area hospitals,” Dist. Fire Chief Dave Matwichuk said on the scene.

Officials said later that a teenager, and two young men were injured – they were being treated in the Burn Unit at the University of Alberta Hospital.

The three suffered serious but non-life threatening burns.

Firefighters quickly determined a small explosion had taken place in the basement of the home, igniting the fire.

A Hazmat team swept the home for dangerous chemicals, and police took over the investigation.

It’s not clear what exploded, how much damage was done, or the current condition of the three people injured in the home.
