Edmonton police said a young boy, who was hit by a vehicle while riding his bike Sunday on the city’s north side, wasn’t wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Investigators said the collision happened at about 9 p.m. Sunday, in the area of 42 Street and 137 Avenue.

A car, being driven by an 81-year-old woman, was heading westbound on the avenue, when it hit the cyclist, who was crossing the street southbound on his bike.

Police said the cyclist suffered critical injuries, and remains in hospital in critical but stable condition.

A police spokesperson said as the weather improves and more families are riding their bicycles, helmets are mandatory for children, and when crossing the street, it’s best to dismount and walk your bike in the crosswalk.

The EPS Major Collision Investigative Unit is handling the case – officials said speed, roadway conditions and weather have been ruled out as contributing factors to the crash.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Edmonton Police Service non-emergency line at 780-423-4567 or #377 on a mobile phone.

Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
