Edmonton Police Service detectives are asking for help from Mill Woods residents, in an effort to track down the weapon used in the recent slaying of a 22-year-old man.

The case dates back to August 6, just before 5 a.m. in the area of Mill Woods Road and 16A Avenue – when a fight allegedly started, and police found Michael Motiuk, 22, suffering from injuries.

Motiuk was rushed to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Now, police are looking for a weapon they believe could be connected to the homicide, and are asking residents of the area to help.

“Sometimes in a backyard there’ little areas there between garages, sheds and fence lines that people never go to,” EPS Homicide Detective Stephen Camp said Monday. “Sometimes in [past investigations] a lot of people will throw a weapon of interest when they’re trying to elude police up into a shed, or garage or rooftop.”

Camp said investigators have searched all of the areas they could, and are asking anyone who finds an edged weapon to not touch or handle it – and to call police immediately.

Anyone who may have found an edged weapon in the days after the homicide is asked to contact police as well.

Anyone with information that could assist in the investigation is asked to call the Edmonton Police Service non-emergency line at 780-423-4567.
