Edmonton police are investigating a fatal shooting incident that happened outside of a downtown bar.

One man is dead and another was sent to hospital, with non-life threatening injuries, shortly after 2:15 a.m.

Police said a confrontation between at least two groups began inside the pub, near 104 Avenue and 112 Street, and continued into the parking lot, and the clash escalated.

“We understand that an altercation began inside the bar between at least two groups of men, and parts of those two groups made their way out to the parking lot where this altercation continued, at such time as one individual began firing,” EPS Insp. Brian Nowlan said at the scene early Tuesday morning.

Investigators said one suspect fled the scene on foot and they describe him as a "tall, black male."

Officers arrived on the scene to find one man dead, and another, a 28-year-old man, suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the arm.

As for the deceased, police said his identity and age had not been confirmed, investigators would only say the man was believed to be in his early 30s, an autopsy had been scheduled for Wednesday morning.

Early Tuesday morning, police said a small group of people went to the scene – and they were later confirmed to be part of the family of the deceased, police spoke to them as part of their investigation.

“Investigators are speaking to them as well, as I say they’re just trying to gather any information they can, as you can imagine they’re very upset and distraught as any family would be,” Insp. Malcolm Allan said. “We’re just trying to handle that with as much care as possible.”
