Police warn public about a text messaging scam circulating in Alberta

Vermilion RCMP issued a warning to the public about a text message scam involving speeding violation tickets.
Police said in a media release the text message scam has been affecting residents all across Alberta.
The scam entails a victim receiving a text message stating their vehicle was caught going over the speed limit and has a link to pay the fine.
Police warn that anyone who received a text message resembling this should not click on the link or make any payments to the website.
RCMP are reminding the public that government and police entities do not issue tickets over text messaging and people should never respond to suspicious text messages or click on any links sent from unknown numbers.
If anyone is unsure if a text message or phone call is fraudulent, police say directly contacting the organization to confirm any fines or payment will clear up any confusion.
To report any fraudulent activities, call Vermilion RCMP at 780-853-5781 and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre either by calling 1-888-495-8501 or submitting it online.
The Alberta RCMP app can also be used to report a crime online or access RCMP news and updates.
The app is available on the Apple store and the Google Play store.
