Police east of Edmonton are investigating a collision from early Thursday morning, that left one dead and two others injured.

Strathcona County RCMP said officers and paramedics were called to the collision on 17 Street south of Petroleum Way in Sherwood Park just before 7 a.m.

Investigators said that at the time of the crash, a long line of traffic had been stopped in the southbound lanes, waiting for a train to clear the tracks farther south on 17 Street.

Police said a car was stopped in the far right lane, before attempting a U-turn across two lanes of traffic – the vehicle was t-boned on the passenger side by a northbound pickup truck.

As a result, the 20-year-old woman who was the passenger in the car was fatally injured, and paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.

The driver of the car, a 25-year-old man, and the 21-year-old male driver of the truck suffered minor injuries – they were both taken to hospital with minor injuries.

RCMP said all three are residents of Edmonton.

Investigators remained on the scene for several hours Thursday – drugs, alcohol, speed and road conditions are not believed to have been factors in the crash.
