Investigators are combing through evidence after a home was destroyed in a fire north-east of Westlock on Tuesday morning – and human remains were found in the ashes.

Westlock RCMP were called at about 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, reporting a fire at a rural home near Tawatinaw, north-east of Westlock.

The Clyde Fire Department and RCMP responded, but the home was completely destroyed when crews arrived.

Fire investigators from Edmonton arrived on the scene, and their early investigation revealed the remains of a person.

The investigation continued Wednesday, with help from the RCMP Forensic Identification Section from Edmonton, the RCMP Major Crimes unit and Provincial fire investigators.

An autopsy will be performed on the remains in Edmonton on Thursday afternoon to find the cause of death, and the identity of the deceased.

The fire is still under investigation.
