Police in Westlock are investigating, after a collision left one person dead Thursday morning.
Westlock RCMP said officers were called to a collision on Highway 18, about two kilometres east of Westlock at about 8:15 a.m.
Investigators have determined an SUV heading westbound on Highway 18 crossed the centre line of the highway, into the path of an eastbound tractor trailer.
The driver of the tractor trailer tried to avoid the SUV, but could not avoid a head-on collision.
The tractor trailer went into the south ditch and stopped near a tree where it caught fire – the only person inside managed to escape with minor injuries.
The lone occupant of the SUV was pronounced dead on the scene; police are trying to notify the next-of-kin of the female driver.
The highway was shut down for about two and a half hours as they investigated – just before noon, RCMP said one lane was opened to traffic.
