One person was taken to hospital after a roof collapsed at a north end grocery store.

Emergency crews responded to the Superstore at 12350 137 Avenue just before 5 p.m. Sunday.

“What it was, was a false ceiling in the deli area that had collapsed,” Captain Darcy Sperling said.

He said that three employees had been trapped after the collapse but were able to get themselves to safety.

“It came to rest between the ovens and the deli counter itself so it left a void in-between where the people could get out.”

One of the employees was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Cashier Freida Leucero said it was a busy time for the store and there was a lot of panic.

“It was like an earthquake.”

Captain Sperling said there was also water damage because the sprinkler system on the ceiling broke.

By Monday morning, the store had reopened to the public.
