Edmonton police are warning Garneau-area residents to keep an eye out after three women were sexually assaulted in their homes over a four-month period.

"Obviously there is a great risk to the members of the public," Det. Scott McMorran said outside of police headquarters Tuesday. "We are concerned with these three because there is a similarity."

The attacks began in late February when a 24-year-old was sexually assaulted in her home. A strange man reportedly broke into her house at 111 Street and 81 Avenue in the early morning while she was sleeping.

He allegedly attacked her and then fled.

Police said a similar attack happened again this month when a man broke into the same house again and sexually assaulted a 47-year-old women.

Investigators found the man also stole some money from the house before fleeing.

Then last weekend, a strange man broke into a different home in the area of 111 Street and 80 Avenue.

He pepper-sprayed a 21-year-old woman and then sexually assaulted her.

The man then fled from the home.

McMorran said in two of the three instances, the attacker entered the home despite the fact the doors were locked.

"(People should) ensure they are diligent in locking their doors and windows," he said. "Be aware of what's going on around the residences at night."

Police are looking for a man with an average build. He was wearing dark clothing at the time of the attacks.

The news spread quickly through the university area, causing many young adults to question their safety.

Brianne Laney, a University of Alberta student, said she is scared walking home at night.

"Around the university I don't really expect it," she said. "It's pretty scary."

Other Garneau residents said they will be taking extra precautions until a suspect is caught.

"I picked the area because it is quiet and close to the U of A," Kristi Hummel said. "I am scared. We don't usually go out at night but if he is breaking into places that is even more of a concern."
