The Shaw Conference Centre is getting a new name after 21 years.

The venue will once again be called Edmonton Convention Centre—the name when it opened in 1983.

"We really wanted to make sure we captured the name 'Edmonton,'" General Manager Richard Wong said.

“We are excited about the possibilities to use the Edmonton Convention Centre name as a platform to elevate the local community and economy,” Edmonton Economic Development CEO Derek Hudson said. “The new name reflects EEDC’s continued dedication to building Edmonton as a regional, national and international destination for events, meetings and conventions.”

Shaw paid $5.5 million for naming rights in 1997. The deal expires Dec. 31.

CTV News learned there were conversations with businesses about sponsorship deals, but no formal bids.

"If another opporunity materializes, great," Ward 1 Councillor Andrew Knack said. "Every bit of revenue we can bring in to offset the operating costs is great."

Wong told CTV News the venue will consider a sponsorship deals in the future, but as of Jan. 1., 'The Shaw' will go back to its roots.
