City Council has voted in favour of slower speed limits around playgrounds and sports fields.

Between 7:30 a.m. and 9 p.m. on roadways that pass the city’s 425 playgrounds and play areas, the speed limit will be reduced to 30 kilometres per hour.

The change was included in a report approved by councillors Tuesday.

The report states current school zones will convert from their current time, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., to longer hours, year round.

Mayor Don Iveson said the change was approved in the interest of safety.

“Because all the data shows, it reduces collisions and saves lives,” Iveson said. “I think all the evidence spoke in the end.”

Councillors said they want to see the change take effect as soon as possible and officials hope new signs and rules will be in place by the end of 2017.

The City told CTV News staff planned to meet Thursday to discuss rolling out playground speed limits.
