RCMP have confirmed a man in his 30s is dead, after a snowmobile he was driving allegedly ended up in a stand of trees Monday morning.

Rocky Mountain House RCMP said officers and emergency crews were called to the scene of a single-vehicle collision at about 7:30 a.m.

Investigators said the crash happened near a ‘T’ intersection near Caroline, located about 40 kilometres southeast of Rocky Mountain House – it’s believed the driver of the snowmobile was travelling west on a township road that came to a dead end.

It’s believed the driver then continued through the intersection, and into a treed area on the other side of the road.

Emergency crews from Clearwater and Sundre were called to the scene, and treated the driver of the snowmobile – his injuries were determined to be critical, and he was airlifted by STARS to hospital in Calgary.

On Tuesday, RCMP confirmed the 33-year-old man had succumbed to his injuries.

Police said he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
