A 49-year-old Spruce Grove man died after being assaulted in the Boyle Co-op store last Friday.

Michael Joseph McCarthy was standing at the cash till inside the store when another male entered the store and confronted him. McCarthy was assaulted and eventually lost consciousness. Police say the suspect then left the store.

McCarthy's wife Debbie told CTV News her husband pulled his big truck into the store to get a coffee. She believes someone who didn't like his driving followed him in and assaulted him.

"When mike finished paying for his coffee, he decided to assault him and Mike was unconscious right away," said Debbie McCarthy.

The man was taken to hospital with severe head injuries. Debbie said her husband was taken off life support Sunday.

An arrest warrant for murder was issued for 25-year-old Jesse James Larose of Caslan, Alta., following the assault.

"The nature of the assault is a critical part to our investigation right now and is something investigators are actively working on but fairly confident they're not known to each other," said Cpl. Darren Anderson, RCMP spokesman.

Larose turned himself in to Edmonton police Monday night. He has now been charged with second-degree murder. He will appear in Boyle Provincial Court on September 8th.

Michael McCarthy leaves behind three children and a granddaughter.
