Strathcona County RCMP are on the scene of a fatal highway collision, and are warning motorists to be careful as driving conditions are poor.

RCMP and Strathcona County emergency crews were on the scene of a fatal two-vehicle crash on Highway 21, near Township Road 510.

Police said the crash happened at about 10:45 a.m.

Investigators said a car was travelling northbound on Highway 21, when the driver and lone occupant lost control of the car, and collided with a southbound minivan.

The driver of the smaller car suffered serious injuries in the crash, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 50-year-old male driver of the van was taken to a Sherwood Park hospital with non-life threatening injuries – three other passengers in the van suffered minor injuries and were treated on the scene.

A section of Highway 21 was closed for an hour and a half while emergency crews and police investigated the scene.

RCMP said area highways are in poor condition, and they are not recommending drivers travel unless they need to.
