City officials are waiting for replacement cables, after a number of them were cut on the suicide barriers on the High Level Bridge.

The city told CTV News the barriers were first targeted by vandals in February, six cables were cut – officials said they were cut with specialized tools.

Crews temporarily covered the gap with mesh, but a few days ago, the mesh was also vandalized and sliced through.

New mesh has been installed as crews wait for replacement cable.

Officials said each section of cable must be replaced, and they’re currently waiting for those parts to be fabricated.

“We’re hoping it doesn’t become a regular occurrence of course, typically most people are respectful of infrastructure, but we do have vandalism every now and again,” Allan Bartman with the City’s Infrastructure Service Department said.

It’s estimated the repairs will cost about $2,000, and will be completed in the coming weeks.
