After searching for a suspect for several hours, police have arrested one person in what officers are calling an ‘aggravated assault with a weapon’ that took place Tuesday morning.

Police were called late Tuesday morning to an apartment building on 182 Street and 85 Avenue.

A short time later, a 43-year-old woman was taken to hospital by ambulance.

On the scene, an officer told CTV News the woman was in stable condition – and the incident was a family-related aggravated assault with a weapon.

Neighbouring buildings were evacuated, and a nearby school was placed on alert.

“It’s a precautionary measure, so teachers are still teaching, students are still learning, but all exterior doors are kept secure,” Edmonton Public School Board spokesperson Dajana Fabjanovich said.

The alert status was lifted when school ended at about 3:30 p.m., and a letter was sent home with students, explaining what had happened.

Police said Tuesday afternoon that a suspect had been taken into custody in West Edmonton Mall – police had notified mall security that the suspect could head to the mall.

Now, a 20-year-old man is facing charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, breach of recognizance and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Police have not released the identity of the accused - only referring to him as Jordan.
