Hundreds of Edmontonians laced up their sneakers Saturday and braved the cold for a good cause.

The 40th annual New Year's Run took place at the Northeast River Valley Park.

"Today's a special day," said Ken Thrasher, vice president of operations for The Brick, which has been a partner of the Running Room event for five years.

"It's something we're really proud of (and) a great day with lots of families and friends across the country."

The run took place in nine Canadian cities.

Thrasher said there were close to 400 participants in Edmonton, and more than 3,000 across the country – together raising about $10,000.

"Even though it's minus 20, they all had smiles on their faces," Thrasher said.

"For many it's a tradition with it happening for 40 years here in Edmonton," he said. "People come out, they look forward to it (and) kicking off the new year, whether it's a resolution or getting some fresh air with friends."

All money raised will go to the Children's Miracle Network to fund children's hospitals in participating cities.
