RCMP in Killam, Alberta said two people had been charged, after police received a report of elder abuse at the Killam Hospital last week.

Police said back on August 22, RCMP received a report of elder abuse by two staff members at the Killam Hospital.

It’s alleged an 88-year-old female patient was assaulted while in the long-term care unit on August 20.

The staff members were arrested the same day the alleged abuse was reported.

Now, Koren Makarowski, 39, from Strome, Alberta, has been charged with one count of assault, and Karen Kueber, 53, from Killam, has been charged with three counts of assault.

The two are set to appear in a Killam courtroom on September 5.

The Killam Health Centre is run by Covenant Health – a statement over the case was posted on their website, saying an investigation and review had been launched.

“We are taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety and well-being of those in our care.”

A spokesperson told the two accused are not working at the centre, and are not allowed onsite.
