RCMP said two people had died after a gravel truck struck a car in Wetaskiwin Tuesday.

Emergency crews and police from Wetaskiwin, Wetaskiwin County and Camrose were called to the crash at the intersection of Highway 13 and 47 Street in Wetaskiwin at about 11:20 Tuesday morning.

Investigators determined a westbound gravel truck and trailer turned left, in the path of an eastbound car.

The driver of the car reportedly tried to avoid a collision, but was not successful – the crash caused extensive damage to the car, and two people were trapped inside.

Crews used the Jaws of Life to pull the 65-year-old male driver, and the 63-year-old female passenger out of the wreck, but both died as a result of injuries suffered in the crash.

RCMP are investigating – alcohol, speed and weather were not factors in the crash.
